<description>This is a colouring book designed to teach children about growing their own vegetables. On each page of the book is a line drawing of a vegetable to be coloured in. After it has been coloured in you rip it out. On the back of the page are instructions on how to fold the paper aeroplane. Embedded within the nose of the plane are four seeds which correspond to the vegetable which was coloured in. The plane is thrown into the garden where it plunges the seeds into the ground. When the rain comes the paper dissolves and fertilizes the seeds. The book is made with paper made from vegetables grown at the point of sale, the illustrations done with squid ink, and no electricity used in the process. My aim was to start with vegetables and end up with more vegetables without any waste or other materials used in between.

<description>Cartogram is a platform for professional and amateur cartography.
It allows you to create and share maps, as well as explore those that others have made.
Within the app there is a marketplace where more serious Cartographers are able to sell (or give away) their bespoke maps.
Along with the app there is a website on which you are able to curate a kind of city guide comprising of maps taken from the community and the store. When you're done you can order one to be delivered to your door in a beautifully designed pack.
The content of these maps is limited only by the imagination of Cartogram's users. Whether it's a map of all of the fruit bearing trees in London,
or a map of "How to find the old New York",
Cartogram promotes the exploration and discovery of hidden worlds within our modern cities.

<description>The Echolocation Trainer is a game that enables any sighted person to train a blind child to see with sound.

Echolocation is the way that bats and dolphins see. They make clicking noises and their brains work out how long the echo's of these clicks take to return. This generates a visual image of their surroundings.

The Echolocation Trainer works via a training manual and a game. These are used in parallel to help develop the brain's ability to see with sound.

The Device is an adaptation of a method used by psychologists and the Manual is based on Daniel Kish's writing on training Echolocation.

<description>BRIEF: To make a piece of sculpture that expresses the idea of a column

What is the idea of a column? A column is typically seen as purely physical, representing solidity and strength. A monument to structure. An idea is an abstract concept. It is metaphysical. So I aimed to make something that lives in the space between reality and fantasy. During the development of the project I played around with reflections, researched optical illusions and different ways of distorting light and creating holograms. The piece intends to confront the user with their idea of a column by containing it in a box. The box appears to have a column inside when the light is switched on. This illusion is achieved with a pane of clear glass leaning at a 45 degree angle. What you see is the reflection of a clear acrylic column suspended above with light shining through it.

<description>The aim of this project was to develop a method of capturing the vast amount of energy transmitted by the sun in the process of turning a seed into a fully grown plant and putting it to practical use. Bamboo is one of the fastest growing plants in the world. In some cases reaching full size in under three weeks. Strong, light and waterproof; bamboo is an extremely useful material. The bamboo grows through the guides in the device. When ready to harvest the guides are removed and the finished bamboo is taken out for assembly and then use. One example of a possible application of this is a garden furniture store where the furniture is grown, assembled and sold all under one roof, thus cutting out energy used in transport and manufacture. However The application of this system is not specifically defined and it could be applied in a number of ways.

<description>In 2009, of the 4730 boating accidents in US territories alone there were over 700 deaths. Most of these deaths were either a result of those involved not wearing their safety gear or caused by them having to get into the water before getting into their life rafts. The A.R.C (Automatic Recovery Capsule) is a suit which is always worn. It looks, feels and behaves just like the sailing gear that is currently worn at all times by high performance boat racers. However there is a life saving device embedded within it. When an accident occurs and the user is in the water, the device is activated. It completely encloses the wearer creating a shelter to protect them from the rough sea, wind and rain. It keeps them warm and dry as well as helping the rescuee to be found and saved.

This was a prototype designed and made by Shim Smilansky, Penny Flicker, Ross Ambrose, Ina Bagočiūtė and Ella Celeste
